Mayco UG-226 Lavender – lavender-purple underglaze for ceramics
Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-226 Lavender is an underglaze in a soft lavender-purple. You can use it to paint floral motifs, backgrounds, outlines or gentle gradients on ceramics. The colour is intended for greenware or bisque. According to Mayco, you can also apply it to wet or leather-hard clay and then fire it to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart).
According to Mayco, the firing range runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). This means you can use the colour in the pottery and ceramics studio at both lower and higher temperatures. As colour shades can change depending on the clay, kiln and firing temperature, Mayco recommends a test with your own clay and kiln.
Applying the underglaze
Shake the jar well before use. Apply the colour with a brush and let each layer dry before adding the next. One coat is enough for soft, transparent lavender tones; for stronger, evenly opaque areas you need 2–3 coats. The colours in the Fundamentals range can be mixed with each other, so you can vary the shade.
- Do not spray without personal protective equipment; apply with a brush or similar tool
- Can be used on greenware, bisque or leather-hard clay
- Apply thinly for details and outlines
Firing and glaze
Without a glaze, the underglaze fires to a matt finish. A clear or matt glaze over the top intensifies the colour. Mayco states that underglaze and clear glaze can also be combined in a single firing. If blisters or craters appear, a hold time of 15 minutes helps, according to Mayco.
Dinnerware only with clear glaze
For cups, plates and other vessels that come into contact with food, the colour is only suitable under a transparent clear glaze that is safe for dinnerware (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze, it is not dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal means that no hazard labelling is required.
