Mayco Underglaze UG-030 Sand – warm beige for patterns and solid areas under clear glaze

Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-030 Sand is an underglaze in a warm beige for ceramics. Use it to paint patterns, fine lines and light shading, or to cover whole areas before the piece is glazed with a clear glaze. The calm sand shade suits natural and floral designs and neutral base tones.

Sand belongs to Mayco's Fundamentals Underglaze series. According to Mayco, the series covers a firing range from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Apply it to wet clay, greenware or bisque. For patterns or full coverage, Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Unglazed, the colour fires to a soft matt; under a clear glaze the surface becomes glossy.

Applying and firing Sand

Apply 2–3 coats and let each coat dry. After that there are two routes, depending on your starting material:

• On clay or greenware: paint, fire to cone 04 (approx. 1,063 °C, guide value per Orton chart), then apply a transparent glaze and fire to cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart). This takes two firings, and the colour becomes lighter as a result.
• On bisque: let the coats dry, apply a clear glaze and fire to cone 05 (approx. 1,031 °C, guide value per Orton chart).

Sand at higher temperatures and on tableware

At cone 06, Sand fires matt. At cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart, reduction), the colour concentrates according to Mayco, so it looks more intense. Make a test piece with your clear glaze and your firing. For stoneware, Mayco recommends the clear glaze SW-001 Stoneware Clear.

For tableware: Sand is only dinnerware safe under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze, use it for decorative pieces.

Do not spray without personal protective equipment. According to ACMI, the ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal means: no hazard labelling.
