Botz 9351 Craquelé Transparent Liquid Glaze – glossy crackle glaze
Botz liquid glaze 9351 Craquelé Transparent is a glossy, clear glaze for earthenware that forms a fine network of cracks as it cools. Because the glaze is transparent, the colour and texture of your clay body remain visible. The crackle pattern (craquelé) appears because the glaze and the clay body shrink by different amounts as they cool. It is intended here and can be coloured in afterwards.
The glaze is stable in the firing range of 1020–1060 °C and is suitable for raku. It has a strong tendency to run. Apply it only once and leave the foot of the piece unglazed.
Application and firing
Method:
- Stir the glaze well and thin with water if needed
- Brush on one coat over bisque-fired ceramics (bisque firing at least 950 °C) and leave to dry thoroughly
- A bisque firing at 1000 °C is recommended, as it helps prevent blistering
- Firing range: 1020–1060 °C
Avoiding running and blistering
The glaze has a strong tendency to run, so apply only one coat and keep a little distance from the foot at the bottom of the piece. If applied on both sides, inside and outside, it may be prone to blistering on some clays. A test piece on your own clay will show you beforehand how the glaze behaves.
Making the craquelé visible
The cracks usually start to form as the piece cools in the kiln and become more pronounced over time. This can take up to a week. If no cracks appear, you can take the piece out of the kiln at approx. 100 °C and quench it in cold water. To highlight the crackle network after firing, colour it in with, for example, black Indian ink, coloured acrylic paints or strong black tea.
