The type of clay or modeling material you choose affects how it handles, its firing temperature and the properties of the finished piece. Depending on the project, ceramic work may use earthenware, stoneware or other clay bodies, while air-dry materials can be a practical option for projects that do not require a kiln.

Which Clay Body Suits Your Project?

– match the firing range of the clay to your kiln and planned glaze
– choose grog content and plasticity to suit hand-building, sculpting or wheel throwing
– for functional ware, follow the manufacturer's information on firing and material properties
– do not treat air-dry materials as equivalent to fired ceramic clay
