Botz Stoneware Engobe 9826 Florida – matt, opaque orange

Botz stoneware engobe 9826 Florida is a liquid engobe in orange for adding colour to stoneware in the firing range 1180–1280 °C. Without glaze it fires to a soft, earthy matt finish, covers well and picks out contours sharply. The 800 ml tin is also enough for larger pieces or several projects.

Florida belongs to the Botz Edition of 15 stoneware engobes, which can be mixed with one another according to Botz. This lets you vary the orange with other Edition colours. The Edition also covers well on dark clay bodies.

Applying the engobe

Stir the engobe well before use. Apply it with a brush in 2–3 coats to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay and let each coat dry thoroughly before continuing. Several thin coats cover more evenly than one thick application. Firing takes place in the firing range 1180–1280 °C; Botz shows its examples at 1250 °C. To judge the colour reliably on your clay, fire a test piece first.

Matt or glossy – with and without glaze

Applied neat, the engobe stays matt. If you want a bright, glossy surface, apply one coat of Botz Transparent 9300 or 9870 over the engobe. The orange then becomes more intense in colour. According to Botz, the engobes are recommended for tableware with a suitable glaze, depending on the glaze. Florida is one of five colours in this selection: the others are 9822 Flamingo, 9823 Tropic, 9824 Rot and 9825 Bamboo, each in 200 and 800 ml.
