Botz Stoneware Engobe 9824 Rot – opaque red for stoneware, 1180–1280 °C
Botz Stoneware Engobe 9824 Rot colours stoneware in the firing range 1180–1280 °C. Without glaze it has a soft, matt, earthy finish, covers well and keeps outlines crisp. Under a clear glaze such as Botz 9300 or 9870, the red looks stronger and glossy. Depending on the glaze, Botz also recommends its engobes under glaze for tableware.
This engobe belongs to the Botz Edition of 15 stoneware engobes and, according to Botz, also covers on dark clay bodies. You can mix it with the other Edition colours to create your own shades of red. This pot holds 800 ml, plenty for larger pieces or many items.
Applying the engobe
Apply the engobe to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay. Stir it thoroughly before use, as the colour pigments settle at the bottom. Several thin coats cover more evenly than one thick coat, which is more likely to crack as it dries.
- Stir well
- Apply 2–3 coats and let each coat dry thoroughly
- For gloss and a stronger colour, add 1 coat of Botz Transparent 9300 or 9870 on top
- Fire in the range 1180–1280 °C; the examples in the Botz catalogue were fired at 1250 °C
Plain or glazed
If the engobe is left unglazed, the surface is matt, earthy and sharply defined. This suits decoration, lines and motifs that should stand out clearly. Under a clear glaze, the red becomes richer and glossy. For tableware, Botz recommends the engobes depending on the glaze, only with a suitable glaze and not unglazed.
Mixing and pot size
The Edition colours can be mixed with one another, so you can tone the red down or shift its shade. Mix the amount for a project in one go and fire a test piece first. Botz also offers the engobes in 200 ml. Choose the 800 ml if you are engobing larger surfaces or many pieces.
