Botz Stoneware Engobe 9820 Sunset – matt, opaque, for 1180–1280 °C
Botz Stoneware Engobe 9820 Sunset is a liquid, plain-coloured engobe for decorating stoneware. You apply it to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay. It is designed for a firing range of 1180 to 1280 °C and belongs to the Botz Edition. The tin contains 800 ml.
Fired without glaze, the engobe has a soft, earthy matt finish, covers well and keeps outlines sharp. With a clear glaze, for example Botz 9300 or 9870, the colour becomes more intense and glossy. You can mix it with other colours from the Edition range.
Applying the engobe
The engobe settles in the tin, so stir it thoroughly before each use. A single thick coat dries less well and can crack; several thin coats give more even coverage.
- Stir the engobe well
- Apply 2–3 coats to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay
- Allow each coat to dry thoroughly
- Fire at 1180–1280 °C
Matt or glossy?
Applied neat, the surface stays matt. If you want a glossy, intensely coloured surface, cover the engobe with a clear glaze. As the effect varies with the glaze and the clay, a test piece will show you beforehand how the result looks in your own work. You can lighten the shade with white from the same range.
