Botz Stoneware Engobe 9807 Toffee – matt brown engobe for 1180–1280 °C

Botz Stoneware Engobe 9807 Toffee is a liquid engobe in a plain brown, used to colour ceramics before firing. It is matt, opaque and reproduces outlines crisply. Without a glaze, the surface has a soft, matt, earthy look.

The engobe is stable across the whole firing range of 1180 to 1280 °C. It therefore suits stoneware fired within this range. You can mix it with other colours from the Botz Edition range if you want to vary the shade.

Applying the engobe

Stir the engobe well before use so that any settled pigments are evenly distributed again. Then apply 2 to 3 coats to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay, letting each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. This gives an even, opaque colour and avoids puddles and runs. Then fire within the range of 1180 to 1280 °C.

Matt or glossy: with and without glaze

Applied on its own, Toffee stays matt. If you cover the engobe with a clear glaze such as BOTZ 9300 or 9870, the brown becomes rich in colour and glossy. How the shade looks in the end depends on your clay, the number of coats and the glaze. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand.
