The Kagalovska BLACK & WHITE SIGNATURE EDITION set (series 11492) from da Vinci contains three watercolour brushes in sizes 0, 2 and 4. It was developed together with fashion illustrator Victoria Kagalovska. The brushes have extra-soft synthetic fibres which, according to the manufacturer, hold a great deal of paint and are particularly springy. This makes it easy to work wet-in-wet, and the paint flows evenly. At the same time, the tips keep their shape for fine detail.

The fibres are traditionally bound and set in plastic ferrules. The handles are short and lacquered black. The brushes are vegan and made in Germany. The set comes in a cardboard box with a magnetic closure, which also makes it suitable as a gift.

Which size for which job?

Three sizes cover the typical stages of a watercolour painting. As a rule of thumb with round brushes, the higher the number, the more paint the brush holds.

• Size 0: fine lines, small details and outlines
• Size 2: medium-sized motifs and modelling shapes
• Size 4: larger areas, gradients and washes

Working with the set

Briefly dampen the brush with clean water before loading it with paint; it will then take up the paint evenly and release it softly. For gradients, apply the paint to the paper wet-in-wet and let it blend. After painting, rinse the brushes in clean water, shape the tip with your fingers and leave them to dry lying flat or hanging. Do not stand them in the water jar with the fibres pointing down, or the hairs will bend. The cardboard box with magnetic closure protects the tips when you store them.
