da Vinci MICRO NOVA set – 4 fine round brushes for miniatures and tabletop

The da Vinci MICRO NOVA set contains four very fine round brushes from series 170 for miniature, micro and tabletop painting. You get one brush each in sizes 20/0, 15/0, 10/0 and 5/0. Together they cover the typical work on figures and models, from the tiniest highlight to small areas.

The brushes have extra-fine, gold-coloured NOVA synthetic fibres. Their elasticity and colour pick-up are modelled on kolinsky hair. They hold paint well and the tip springs back after each stroke. The short special handle keeps your hand close to the tip for intricate work and does not roll away on the table.

Which size for which detail?

The higher the number before the slash, the finer the brush. Use the 20/0 for the smallest details such as eyes, highlights or fine lines. The 15/0 and 10/0 are for outlines, ornaments and small accents. The 5/0 is the largest brush in the set and suits small areas and applying paint before you refine the work with the finer sizes.

Working with fine brushes

Pick up only a little paint and wipe the brush off on the edge of the palette. Thin acrylic paint slightly so that it flows into the tip and does not clump. Do not dip the brush as far as the ferrule, because paint that dries there splays the hairs. After painting, rinse the brush thoroughly with water, otherwise acrylic paint dries in the fibres. Then reshape the tip with your fingers and leave the brush to dry lying flat.
