BeaverCraft K1/10 Flat Chisel – Straight Blade for Notches, Reliefs and Outlines
The BeaverCraft K1/10 flat chisel is a compact, straight carving chisel with a single bevel (sweep No. 1) for notches, reliefs and outlines in wood. The 10 mm wide carbon steel blade is hand-sharpened and honed, razor sharp and ready to use straight away. You can use it on softwood and hardwood, and according to the manufacturer it suits beginners and experienced wood carvers alike.
The straight edge lets you remove wood precisely and shape flat surfaces, for example in wood reliefs, ornaments or other carving projects. The handle is made of ash and impregnated with oil.
Working with the flat chisel
Clamp your workpiece firmly so that both hands are free for the chisel. For an outline, set the blade upright along the line and make a short cut. Then pare the wood away from the surface towards this notch, leaving a clean edge. Work with the grain and take several thin shavings rather than one deep cut, as the wood will tear out less. Always keep your guiding hand behind the cutting edge. The chisel is driven by hand pressure only. According to the manufacturer, striking it with a hammer or mallet is not intended.
What the K1/10 is suited to
At 10 mm wide and a compact 192 mm overall length, the chisel is suited to smaller, detailed work such as notches, relief cuts and outline cuts. For wider surfaces you will need correspondingly wider blades, and for rounded shapes a gouge is more suitable.
