The Efco chestnut drill set consists of four metal hand drills. You can use them to make holes in chestnuts, acorns and similar natural materials without any electricity.

You mainly need the holes for chestnut figures: you later join the arms, legs and head with cocktail sticks or thin twigs. As the four drills are different sizes, you can choose the hole to suit the connecting material.

Drilling chestnuts

Freshly collected chestnuts are still soft and are the easiest to drill; dried ones become hard. Place the chestnut on a non-slip surface and hold it so that your hand is not in the line of drilling. Position the tip and turn the drill back and forth with light pressure until the hole is deep enough. Do not force it, so that the shell does not split.

Which drill to use

Start with a smaller size and test whether your cocktail stick or twig fits firmly in the hole. If the hole is too big, the joint will not hold. The drills are pointed: children should only use them under supervision.
