Prym bodkins for elastic, ribbon and cord – threading elastic and cord safely through a casing

With the Prym bodkins for ribbons and braids, you can thread elastic, braid or cord through casings, for example in a waistband, hood or sportswear. The three plastic bodkins come in assorted colours and have a tapered shape with a rounded tip that slides easily through the casing.

At the back there are two toothed slots that hold ribbons 6, 12 or 18 mm wide. That gives you the right tool for both narrow and wide ribbons. At the tip there is an eyelet for a retrieval cord, which helps when replacing old elastic.

How to thread a ribbon

Choose the slot that matches the width of your ribbon and clamp the end between the teeth. Then push the bodkin through the casing, rounded tip first, gathering the fabric along as you go. Beforehand, secure the other end of the ribbon to the fabric, for example with a safety pin, so that it does not disappear into the casing. When replacing an old ribbon, attach a cord to the eyelet so that you can pull the bodkin back if needed.
