The Schmincke HORADAM watercolour tin (art. no. 74 657 097) is a watercolour set with 12 artists' colours in half pans and a porcelain palette for mixing. According to Schmincke, it is a compact set of 12 shades away from the usual selection, particularly well suited to mixing further shades. It contains 9 standard and 3 super-granulating shades.

The porcelain palette complements the metal palettes of the tin. Its smooth surface is suitable for mixing and judging your colours. The metal tin is compact and so also fits into a bag for sketching on the go.

What's in the tin

The twelve colours are not a standard selection of the usual basic shades, but an assortment of shades such as Perylene Violet, Helio Cerulean, Burnt Umber or Tundra Violet. For the HORADAM range, Schmincke states the highest lightfastness and pigment quality. Once dry in the pan, the colours can be reactivated with water, so you can use them over many painting sessions. Super-granulating colours deposit their pigments in a grainy way in the texture of the paper. You will see this most with plenty of water on textured watercolour paper.

Working with the tin

Moisten the pans briefly with a few drops of water and leave them to soften for a moment. Then pick up the colour with a wet brush and mix it with water on the porcelain palette. Dilute more for glazes and colour gradients; use more paint for strong tones. After painting, leave the pans open to dry before you close the tin. That way the colours will not stick to the inside of the lid.
