Fine silver pencil – silverpoint stylus with a 99.99 % fine silver lead
The fine silver pencil is a silverpoint drawing tool with a lead of fine silver (99.99 % silver) set in a walnut-brown wooden handle. You use it like a pencil for very fine preliminary drawings or drawings on paper. It makes thin, delicate lines that are barely visible at first. Over time silver sulphide forms, and the lines darken to a brownish tone.
The silverpoint technique was widespread in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and artists including Leonardo da Vinci and Albrecht Dürer drew with it. The lead can be re-sharpened, so almost its entire length can be used.
Drawing with the silverpoint stylus
Silver leaves hardly any mark on bare paper. For silverpoint drawings, use paper with a suitable ground. Guide the stylus with light pressure and build up areas from many fine strokes or hatching, as single lines always remain delicate. Silver lines are very hard to remove, so it is best to lay out the composition carefully.
Caring for the point
When the point becomes blunt, re-sharpen the lead. This way you can use almost its entire length. The lead itself measures approx. 50 mm, and the handle brings the pencil to a total length of 175 mm.
