Schmincke Acrylic Thickener – acrylic paint with body and texture

Schmincke Acrylic Thickener is a thick additive that gives acrylic paints a heavier, buttery consistency. You can use it for impasto, mixed media and textured work with a brush or palette knife on canvas, paper or other painting surfaces.

The thickener is water-miscible and does not form a film. It is therefore not a binder and is only mixed into the paint as an additive, never used neat. The tube contains 60 ml and is made in Germany.

How to mix in the thickener

Even small amounts change the consistency noticeably. Add the thickener in small portions and mix it in thoroughly, ideally on a separate palette rather than directly on the painting.

• Put a little acrylic paint on the palette
• Add the thickener sparingly and mix in evenly
• Check the consistency and add more in small steps if needed
• Apply with a brush or palette knife

Dosage and common mistakes

Too much thickener can cause incompatibility when mixing and impair how the paint spreads. As the thickener does not form a film, it does not bind the pigments: use only as much as you need for the texture you want, and test the mixture on a trial piece first.

Cleaning

Clean brushes and palette knives with water straight after use, with a little soap if needed. Acrylic paint that has already dried can be loosened with brush cleaner. Use water for thinning.
