Schmincke Acryl SUPER Retarder – more time for wet-in-wet painting

Schmincke Acryl SUPER Retarder is a gel-like additive for acrylic paint that slows drying more strongly. You add it to the paint when you want to work wet-in-wet for longer, blend softly or take your time over transitions. The consistency of the paint is retained.

According to Schmincke, adding approx. 20% extends the drying time of the paint by approx. 75%. This lets you control the open time, rather than letting the paint dry on the palette.

How to use the SUPER Retarder

Mix the retarder directly into the acrylic paint on the palette. Start with a small amount and work towards the open time you want.

• Adding approx. 20% extends the drying time by approx. 75%.
• Add no more than 50%.
• Never use the retarder undiluted; always mix it with paint.
• If you use higher proportions, make a test swatch on your painting surface first.

When is the SUPER Retarder worth using?

The SUPER Retarder slows drying more strongly than a standard retarder. It suits long wet-in-wet sessions, such as large colour gradients, soft transitions or when you want to keep corrections workable for longer. For only a slight delay, Schmincke also makes the standard Acryl Retarder, where according to the manufacturer 20% added extends drying by approx. 50%. The maximum addition there is 30%.
