Royal Talens Amsterdam Black Gesso Primer for Acrylic and Oil

Amsterdam Black Gesso – Primer for Acrylic and Oil Paints

Royal Talens Amsterdam Black Gesso is a primer that prepares canvas, wood, card or paper for acrylic and oil paints. Once dry, it forms an absorbent ground to which paint adheres well. Used on its own, the gesso gives a black ground with a smooth, matt finish.

You can thin it with water and mix it with acrylic paint to obtain intense, dark shades. Once dry, the layer is waterproof. Choose the pack size from the options.

Working with black gesso

The surface should be free of dust and grease. Apply the gesso in several thin layers and let each layer dry before applying the next. For more texture, you can also apply a thick layer. If needed, thin it with a little water. The gesso can also be tinted with acrylic paint and mixed with other Amsterdam gessos. On alkaline surfaces such as concrete, stucco or brick, it serves as a primer for mural painting. Use it at 10 °C or above and store it frost-free. Clean brushes and tools with water while the gesso is still wet.

Black, white or transparent?

Amsterdam Gesso is available in transparent, white and black. Choose the black version if your picture is to be painted on a dark ground: light, opaque colours stand out strongly on it, while transparent colours look darker. The transparent gesso leaves the surface visible and suits you if you want to include wood or paper in the picture.
