Royal Talens Gesso Primer 1001 – universal primer for oil, acrylic and poster paint
Royal Talens Gesso Primer 1001 is a white primer based on an acrylate resin dispersion with titanium dioxide. You can use it to prepare absorbent surfaces such as canvas, wood, plywood, hardboard, card and paper for painting. The primer gives oil, acrylic and poster paint good adhesion, so the paint does not sink in unevenly.
You can tint the gesso with acrylic paint if you do not want a white ground, and thin it with water. According to the manufacturer, it is also suitable as a primer for murals on alkaline and non-alkaline surfaces such as fresh concrete, stucco and brick.
How to apply the primer
The surface must be absorbent, dust-free and grease-free. Stir the gesso well before use and apply it evenly. Several thin coats give a more even finish than one thick coat; let each coat dry first. You can adjust the consistency with a little water. According to the manufacturer, the gesso dries within a few hours. If you want to paint with oil paint, wait 24 hours, after which the surface can be painted over.
Highly absorbent surfaces and storage
According to the manufacturer, highly absorbent surfaces should first be pre-treated with Amsterdam acrylic binder. Only use the gesso at temperatures above 10 °C and store the tub frost-free. Clean brushes and tools with water while the gesso has not yet dried.
