Talens Gouache Extra Fine Set – Primary Colours, White and Black for Mixing

The Talens (Royal Talens) set contains 8 tubes of Gouache Extra Fine, 20 ml each, 160 ml in total. You can use them to paint matt, opaque areas of colour and to mix further shades. Lemon Yellow 205, Magenta 397 and Cyan 501 are the true primaries, joined by White and Black for lightening and darkening.

The paint is highly pigmented and, according to the manufacturer, is based on dextrin. This gives a smooth consistency and reduces surface shine. Diluted with water, it becomes slightly more transparent, so you can also paint soft gradients.

Mixing with the set

The primaries Lemon Yellow 205, Magenta 397 and Cyan 501 are your mixing base. The other colours save you mixing time on frequently used shades.

• Green is made from yellow and cyan, orange from yellow and vermilion, violet from magenta and ultramarine.
• White lightens and makes shades more opaque; add black only in tiny amounts, as it quickly dominates.
• Always mix a little more paint on the palette than you need, as it is hard to match a shade exactly later.

Application

For even, matt areas without visible brushstrokes, dilute the paint with water to a creamy consistency. With more water, the paint becomes more transparent and you can create soft colour gradients. As the gouache is not waterproof even after drying, it can still be reworked with water. When painting over with a wet brush, dry layers can dissolve again, so work quickly and with light pressure.
