Staedtler 553 02 quick-adjust compass with extension bar, up to Ø 560 mm

Staedtler 553 02 quick-adjust compass – small and large circles with one compass

The Staedtler 553 02 is a quick-adjust compass for technical drawing. You set the radius using the push-button mechanism and the centre-wheel spindle. Without the extension you can draw circles up to Ø 360 mm; with the extension bar supplied, up to Ø 560 mm. One tool therefore covers everything from small construction drawings to large circles on a drawing sheet.

The lead leg can be angled, and the needle point guard protects the paper when you pierce it. The lead insert is replaceable and has a 4 mm pin. According to Staedtler, the universal adapter holds the usual writing and drawing instruments, for example for coloured circles. Everything is stored in the hinged-lid case, with the spare leads in the lead box.

How to draw a circle

Set the radius with the push button and the centre-wheel spindle, place the needle point in the centre and hold the compass by the head. Tilt it slightly in the direction of drawing and draw the circle in one even turn. For larger radii, angle the lead leg so that the lead stands at right angles to the paper and the line stays clean. The needle point is sharp: take care when working and when putting the compass away, and return it to the case after use.

When you need the extension

Up to Ø 360 mm you do not need the extension. For larger circles up to Ø 560 mm, attach the extension bar. The longer the leg, the more important it is to guide the compass steadily and evenly so that the radius does not change. When the lead is used up, insert a spare lead from the lead box.
