Faber-Castell Polychromos Set of 12 – Artists' Coloured Pencils in a Metal Tin

The set contains 12 Polychromos artists' coloured pencils from Faber-Castell in a metal tin. You can use them for drawing, colouring and freehand artwork. According to Faber-Castell, the pencils are intended for graphic applications, freehand design and precise colouring of plans.

The pigments have high lightfastness and colour brilliance, and the laydown is soft and rich in colour. The colour is smudge-proof and waterproof, so it does not smudge when you work over it. The 3.8 mm lead is firmly bonded into the wood by Secural bonding (SV) and is therefore less likely to break, for example if a pencil is dropped. According to the manufacturer, the wood in the set of 12 comes from PEFC-certified forestry. The metal tin protects the pencils in transit.

Working with Polychromos

Sharpen the pencils with a sharp sharpener so the lead does not break off and you can draw fine lines. For larger areas, apply the colour in several thin layers, starting with the light shades. This creates gradients, and you can mix colours directly on the paper, for example yellow and blue to make green. With even, light pressure, the surface of the paper stays receptive to further layers for longer. As the colour is smudge-proof and waterproof, you can also add outlines or details over areas you have already laid down.

Which set to choose

With 12 colours you get a compact basic set for sketches, studies and travel, which you can add colours to later. If you need many in-between shades, for example for portraits or botanical subjects, Polychromos in a metal tin is also available as a set of 24, 36, 60 and 120.
