PITT natural drawing charcoal from Faber-Castell is a classic dry drawing medium for sketches, shading and studies. This pack contains 4 sticks with a diameter of 9–15 mm. According to Faber-Castell, the grey-blue charcoal glides softly over the paper and leaves a bluish-black line. It is grease- and oil-free.

The charcoal blends and smudges easily. According to the manufacturer, you can erase and draw over it repeatedly without difficulty. This lets you build up areas and tonal values in several steps and make corrections without starting again.

Working with thick charcoal sticks

A thick stick covers large areas quickly: lay it flat on the paper and drag it along its length to create broad, soft tones. For outlines and strong lines, use the edge or the end. Fine details are harder to achieve with this thickness. To blend, use your finger, a paper stump or a cloth. You can also break a stick to work with a shorter piece. Charcoal grips paper with a slight texture better than very smooth paper. Protect finished drawings with fixative, as charcoal smudges easily otherwise.

Which thickness to choose?

The charcoal in this series comes in several thicknesses, such as Ø 3–6 mm, 5–8 mm, 6–11 mm and 9–15 mm. The Ø 9–15 mm sticks are among the thickest. Use them for broad studies, shading and figure sketches on larger formats. For finer lines and smaller sheets, choose one of the thinner sizes.
