Mayco Stoneware SW-116 Robin's Egg – matt greenish-blue stoneware glaze with crystals
Mayco Stoneware SW-116 Robin's Egg is a stoneware glaze for ceramics in a matt greenish-blue with sand-coloured crystals. You apply it to bisque-fired ceramics and fire it in the stoneware range. The 473 ml of contents covers several pieces; how many depends on size and application.
At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidation firing, the crystals melt and leave small sand-brown blooms in the glaze. This creates a speckled, textured finish. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe if you use it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Effect in the kiln
The glaze looks different depending on the firing type. Choose the firing to suit your kiln and the finish you want.
- Cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), oxidation: matt, greenish-blue, with sand-coloured crystals and small sand-brown blooms, speckled and textured
- Cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), reduction: semi-gloss, varying shades of blue and light blue with visible crystals
Application and firing
Stir the glaze thoroughly before applying, as crystals and pigments can settle at the bottom. Apply it with a brush and do not spray it. Leave the foot ring of the piece free of glaze so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf. The texture and the colour of the crystals depend on the firing and on your clay. A test piece shows you beforehand how the glaze looks with your clay. The firing range is the stoneware range from 1220 to 1280 °C.
