Schmincke Acrylic Binder Ready-to-use – for making your own acrylic paints from pigments
Schmincke Acrylic Binder Ready-to-use (art. no. 50840037) is a ready-to-use binder made from pure acrylic dispersion and wetting agent, which you can use to grind your own acrylic paints from artists' pigments. The colours dry to a silk-matt finish. The contents are 200 ml.
You can also add the binder to ready-made acrylic paints instead of thinning them with water. This improves adhesion to the surface and increases gloss and transparency. It is lightfast, non-yellowing and can be thinned with water. Once dry, it is waterproof.
How to make your own acrylic paint
Shake the binder well before use. As a guide, use approx. 2 parts binder to 1 part pigment. How much binder you actually need depends greatly on the pigment: some pigments need more, others less. Add the pigment to the binder gradually, not the other way round.
- Mix the pigment with a little binder on the palette or in a container to form a smooth paste, and work it with the palette knife until free of lumps
- Stir in the remaining binder gradually until the paint has the consistency you want
- Make a test patch on your painting surface and let it dry to check the colour and gloss
Good to know
The binder dries transparent and glossy. Paints ground with pigment look silk-matt; the pigment determines how well they cover. Paint you grind yourself is meant to be used soon and keeps only a few days in a closed container, so mix only the amount you intend to use.
- Close immediately after use
- Clean tools with soap and water
- Store in a cool, dry place and protect from frost
- Do not use at temperatures below 10 °C
