Schmincke Oil Binder Ready-to-use – ready-made binder for grinding your own oil paints
Schmincke Oil Binder Ready-to-use is a ready-to-use binder for grinding pure Schmincke artists' pigments into buttery oil paint. It contains a siccative, which helps the finished paint to dry well on the surface and all the way through. As it yellows very little, it is also suitable for light shades. It comes in a 200 ml jar.
According to the manufacturer, the binder consists of natural vegetable oils and additives. You decide on the pigment, consistency and texture yourself, so you can mix shades that are not available ready-made.
Grinding your oil paint
Put a teaspoon of pigment on a glass plate or a glazed tile, shake the binder well beforehand and add it. Grind the two together with a palette knife to a smooth paste. As a starting ratio, Schmincke recommends about 1 part binder to 1 part pigment by weight for this binder. Depending on the pigment, you then add more binder or more pigment.
Is the mixing ratio right?
Spread out a little paint and leave it to dry. If the film is smooth and does not rub off when you rub it with the heel of your dry hand, the ratio is right. A mixture that chalks needs more binder. Schmincke always recommends a preliminary test for paints you grind yourself. Oil paints dry slowly, and when building up layers the rule is "fat over lean": lower layers contain less oil than upper ones. To thin the paint, use white spirit.
