Schmincke AKADEMIE Acryl color Set – 8 acrylic paints in a boxed set for getting started

The Schmincke boxed basic set contains 8 tubes of AKADEMIE Acryl color, 60 ml each. It suits anyone starting out with acrylic paints or building up their palette with a solid basic range. The paints are highly pigmented, brilliant and opaque, dry waterproof and have a long open time. That gives you a little more time for mixing and blending. They are also cadmium-free and have a pleasant smell.

The colours can be used opaque or transparent, mix well and are suitable for all acrylic techniques as well as mixed media. The paints are made in Germany.

Which colours you can mix

The set covers the main colour families with yellow, red, blue and green. Added to these are white for lightening, plus ochre, umber and black for earth tones and darkening. Cadmium yellow hue and carmine red give you orange tones, while yellow and phthalo blue make greens. Titanium white makes mixtures lighter and more opaque. You get dark tones by adding black or umber in small amounts only. The paints can be combined with all other Schmincke acrylic paints and acrylic mediums, so you can expand the set later.

Working with the acrylic paints

Squeeze the paint onto a palette and mix it with a brush or palette knife. For transparent effects, apply it in thin layers with little paint and some water; for opaque effects, use it straight from the tube. Thanks to the long open time, you can blend transitions on the canvas before the paint starts to dry. Wash your brushes out straight after painting: dried acrylic paint is waterproof and is almost impossible to remove. If you thin the paint with a lot of water, the paint film becomes thin and less opaque. For greater flow or for other surface effects, acrylic mediums are the better choice.
