Modelling Loop Tool No. 4 – Triangular Loop for Hollowing Clay

The No. 4 modelling loop tool is a clay tool with a small triangular loop made of steel ribbon and a wooden handle. You use it to cut recesses out of damp clay and to hollow out pieces. The tool is 130 mm long and easy to handle, whether you are a beginner or an experienced potter.

The loop is made of ground steel ribbon that is 6 mm wide. The triangular shape helps you reach corners and tapering recesses that a round loop cannot get into.

How to hollow out clay

Place the loop flat against the clay and draw it through in even strokes. This works best on leather-hard clay, as very soft clay smears and sticks to the loop. Take off several thin shavings rather than one deep cut. This keeps the wall thickness under control and the walls even.

Choosing the right shape

The modelling loop tools in this series come in five shapes, from No. 1 to No. 5. No. 4 is the triangle, while No. 5 is round. The triangular loop is used to work out corners and narrow grooves, while the round shape suits even hollows.
