Working with cane

Soak the cane in warm water before weaving so that it becomes pliable and can be bent without kinks. Work quickly and keep the cane damp as you weave: if it dries out in between, it becomes stiff again and may break when bent. The finished weaving then dries in shape and becomes firm.

Which thickness to choose

Thinner cane is suited to fine weaving, wrapping and small decorative pieces. You use thicker sizes for bases, stakes and sturdier baskets. For a project, it is best to combine two sizes: one for the framework, one for the weaving.
