Mayco Stoneware Engobe EG-004 Dark Brown – matt dark brown engobe for stoneware

Mayco Stoneware Engobe Dark Brown EG-004 is a dark brown engobe for stoneware. It gives light, red or speckled clay bodies the look of a dark brown clay without you having to change clay. It produces an even, matt surface with a warm, earthy effect. In an oxidation firing at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) it fires to a matt brown. In a reduction firing at cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) its appearance remains largely unchanged.

You can use the engobe neat or combine it with transparent, semi-transparent and effect stoneware glazes. It is suitable for sgraffito, majolica, marbling, screen printing and wax resist. The dark ground contrasts strongly with light engobes, so sgraffito designs stand out clearly.

Applying the engobe

Stir the engobe thoroughly before use. Apply two to three even coats with a soft fan brush and let each coat dry before applying the next. This works on wet clay, on greenware and on softly fired bisqueware. Then fire the piece with the matt engobe surface or cover it with a suitable stoneware glaze.

Glazing over the engobe and dinnerware

A transparent glaze can intensify the dark brown and give the surface more depth of colour and gloss. Semi-transparent and reactive glazes create contrasts with the dark ground, while opaque glazes can partly or fully cover the engobe. The engobe can affect the flow and the firing result of the glaze over it. So test clay body, application thickness, glaze and firing temperature on a test piece before starting larger projects.

For dinnerware: the engobe is only suitable under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze it is not intended for eating and drinking vessels. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means: non-hazardous (no labelling required).
