Mayco Stoneware Engobe EG-003 Brick Red – matt brick-red finish for stoneware

Mayco Stoneware Engobe Brick Red EG-003 is an engobe for stoneware that gives your clay a warm, matt red-brown surface with a brick and terracotta look. It lets you give pale, speckled or dark clay bodies the look of a red-brown clay without changing the clay body.

You can use the engobe neat or combine it with transparent, semi-transparent and effect stoneware glazes. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidation firing, it fires to a matt red-brown. In a reduction firing at cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the appearance remains largely unchanged.

Application

The engobe is suitable for damp clay, greenware and softly bisque-fired ware. Designs can be created with sgraffito, majolica, marbling, screen printing and wax resist.

• Stir the engobe thoroughly before use.
• Apply 2–3 even coats with a soft fan brush.
• Let each coat dry before applying the next.
• Then fire, or cover with a suitable stoneware glaze.

Combining engobe and glaze

A transparent glaze can intensify the red-brown shade and give the surface more depth. Semi-transparent and reactive glazes give combinations with the warm base colour. Opaque glazes partly or completely cover the engobe. The engobe can also affect the flow and firing result of the glaze over it. Test the clay body, application thickness, glaze and firing temperature on a test piece before starting larger work.

Suitability for tableware

According to Mayco, the engobe is dinnerware safe only under a transparent, tableware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze, it is not intended for food and drink tableware. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) stands for a product exempt from hazard labelling.
