Art Clay Silver 20 g – silver metal clay for making your own fine silver jewellery
Art Clay Silver (Silverclay) is a modelling clay made from fine silver, an organic binder and water, which you can use to shape jewellery and small objects in silver without casting or forging. Once dry, you fire the piece: the binder burns away and the silver sinters into fine silver with 99.9 % purity. The tin contains 20 g.
According to the manufacturer Aida Chemical Industries, the silver is 100 % recycled. You do not need any casting equipment: a kiln, a gas torch or a gas hob is enough to get started. If you would like to try it out first, the clay is also available in a smaller 7 g pack.
Working with Art Clay Silver
The clay dries quickly in the air. Take only as much from the tin as you are going to work with straight away, and keep the rest tightly sealed.
- Model the piece on a clean surface and lightly moisten the clay with water if needed.
- Let the piece dry through completely. Residual moisture can cause cracks or bubbles during firing.
- Fire it in a kiln, with a gas torch or on a gas hob.
- After firing, the surface is matt white. Only polishing brings out the silver shine.
Firing: temperature and time
According to the manufacturer, Art Clay Silver is a basic type that you can fire at 650 to 800 °C. In a kiln, 30 minutes at 650 °C or 5 minutes at 800 °C is enough. Choose the option that suits your kiln and any glass, porcelain or ceramic parts you are using. The piece shrinks during firing, so make it a little larger than you need.
