da Vinci Pastel Applicator Set 5034 with 6 Interchangeable Heads

da Vinci Pastel Applicator Set, Series 5034 – Blending and Smudging Pastel

The da Vinci pastel applicator set (series 5034) consists of an applicator with a black lacquered handle and a total of 6 interchangeable Rubicell heads. You use it to blend and smudge pastel and to mix colours on the painting surface. Charcoal and chalk can also be picked up and applied with it.

The oval heads are made of synthetic foam and simply slip onto the handle. When a head is full of pigment, pull it off and fit a fresh one. Five spare heads are included in the set, so you do not need to buy replacements straight away. The set is made in Germany by the da Vinci artists' brush factory DEFET.

Working with the applicator

Apply the pastel first with a pastel stick or pencil, then stroke over it with the foam head in small movements. Light pressure creates soft transitions, while more pressure smudges the colour further. You can also pick up pigment with the head and apply it again elsewhere.

When to change the head

With pastel, the foam gradually picks up pigment. It is therefore best to use separate heads for light and dark areas, so that colours do not get dirty unintentionally. With the 6 heads in the set, you can divide them up for different colour areas.
