The da Vinci NOVA paint brush set 4226 contains four synthetic brushes for acrylic, watercolour, gouache, tempera and ink. According to da Vinci, it is an all-round set for art and hobby use, suitable for beginners and hobby painters. According to the manufacturer, the brushes have good elasticity, shape retention and a fine tip, which you can use to add detail and paint larger areas.

The synthetic fibres are gold-coloured, the ferrules silver-coloured and the short handles polished green. Short handles sit close to the tip in the hand, which helps with precise work at a table. da Vinci lists paper and skin as painting surfaces, and applications include body painting and reverse glass painting. According to da Vinci, the set is vegan.

Which brush for what?

The set covers three round brush sizes and one flat brush, so for most tasks when you are starting out you will already have a suitable brush.

Using the synthetic brushes

Pick up only enough paint that the tip does not clump, and wipe the brush off on the edge of the palette. With acrylic, do not let paint dry in the ferrule, as dried acrylic is very hard to remove. Rinse the brush in lukewarm water straight after painting, shape the tip with your fingers and leave it to dry lying flat. Never leave brushes standing in water with the hairs down, otherwise the tip will bend.
