Matt black Chicago screws – removable fastening for books, booklets and leather
These Chicago screws (book screws) in matt black join paper, leather and other flat materials so that you can open the fastening again later. You can use them for binding books and booklets, for holding loose sheets together or for leatherwork.
Each screw consists of a hollow post with an internal thread and the matching screw part. The head has a diameter of 10 mm, and the screw is designed for a material thickness of 5 mm. Because you can undo them, they suit anything that needs to be interchangeable, such as changeable belt buckles or dog collars.
Fitting Chicago screws
Punch or drill a hole through all the layers that matches the shank of the screw. Push the hollow post through from one side, insert the screw part from the other side and screw the two together tightly. Line up the layers exactly beforehand so that the holes align and nothing slips. With books and booklets, you can add or swap individual sheets later by unscrewing the screw again.
Checking the material thickness
Measure the total thickness of all the layers you want to join and compare it with 5 mm. If your stack is much thinner, the fastening will sit loosely. If it is thicker, the screw cannot be closed properly. Gold and silver coloured Chicago screws are available as separate items.
