Audrey Blackman 1101 – White Translucent Porcelain Body

Audrey Blackman 1101 is a premium white and translucent-firing porcelain body originating from England. Its high plasticity and exceptionally fine, smooth texture make it an excellent choice for demanding wheel-thrown work as well as hand-building and modelling.

The porcelain can be shaped with great precision, making it particularly suitable for thin-walled vessels, fine contours and highly detailed ceramic pieces. It can be used for elegant functional ware, decorative objects, delicate sculptures, lighting pieces and contemporary porcelain design. Valentine Clays describes the body as highly plastic, exceptionally white and remarkably translucent.

After firing, the body develops a particularly pure and bright porcelain colour. In thin sections, light can partially pass through the material. This creates the characteristic translucency of fine porcelain: the object is not transparent, but develops a soft, luminous glow when illuminated from behind.

Fine Porcelain for Throwing and Hand-Building

Audrey Blackman 1101 contains no grog and has an exceptionally smooth texture. This makes it possible to create fine details, crisp edges and even wall thicknesses. Despite its fineness, the body offers high plasticity and is suitable for both wheel-thrown and hand-built work.

When does the porcelain become translucent?

Translucency is most visible in thin-walled areas. The finer and more evenly the piece is made, the more clearly the luminous effect can appear when light shines through from behind. Thicker areas remain largely opaque.

Is this porcelain suitable for beginners?

Its high plasticity makes the porcelain pleasant to shape. However, porcelain is generally more sensitive to uneven wall thicknesses, rapid drying and contamination than many stoneware bodies. Beginners should start with smaller pieces with even walls and allow them to dry slowly.

Our experience: Work surfaces, tools and hands should be kept especially clean when working with white porcelain. Even small traces of dark or red clay may contaminate the body and remain visible after firing.

Our tip: Allow thin porcelain pieces to dry slowly and evenly. Loosely cover the piece with plastic during the first drying stage and test both the glaze and the desired translucency on a sample piece first.
