Lang Yarns Astra – metallic carry-along yarn for accents

Astra from Lang Yarns is a metallised carry-along yarn. You knit it together with a second yarn to add glittering accents to cuffs, edgings or other details. The yarn is made of 60% polyester (metallised) and 40% polyamide. The light reflections of the metallic thread make plain knitted pieces look more festive.

According to the manufacturer, one ball weighs 25 g and has a length of approx. 550 m. Because the yarn is very fine, even a small weight gives a great length: for accents such as edgings or stripes you need very little, while a thread carried all the way through the work requires more.

Working with Astra

Astra runs as a second strand alongside a main yarn. Knit both strands as if they were a single one. The needle size and tension depend on the main yarn, as Astra is so fine that it barely affects the stitch size. What matters is the tension given in your pattern; the figure on the ball band is only a guide.

What the yarn is suited to

The metallic thread adds shine to places that catch the eye: cuffs, bands, edgings or individual stripes. With a soft, fluffy main yarn such as mohair, the contrast between the matt fibre and the shiny thread is particularly striking. If you only want to highlight certain areas, add Astra just there and simply let the thread run out when you change.
