Liquitex Matt Medium – matt finish and better flow for acrylic paints

Liquitex Professional Matt Medium (art. no. 5108) is a liquid, water-based acrylic medium. You use it when you want acrylic paints to dry matt and you want to adjust their consistency. According to Liquitex, it makes the paint more fluid and more transparent and can be mixed with acrylic paints.

The medium increases the volume of the paint and lowers its viscosity while retaining the adhesion and binding strength of the acrylic paint. This saves paint and suits glazing, fine transitions and work where gloss would be a distraction. The bottle contains 237 ml.

Working with Matt Medium

Put a little medium on the palette and stir it into the acrylic paint with a brush or palette knife until the mixture is even. The more medium you add, the more transparent and fluid the paint becomes. This lets you build up glazes in several layers. If needed, you can dilute the medium with up to 25 % water; Liquitex recommends distilled water. Do a test swatch first on the surface you plan to use, as the paint looks different wet and dry.

Matt or gloss?

Use Matt Medium when the finished surface should have no gloss, for example for paintings that will be photographed later, where reflections would be a nuisance. If you want a silky sheen, mix it with a Gloss Medium. Decide on the ratio by making test strokes.

You will also need: brush or palette knife for mixing and applying, acrylic paints, palette; distilled water for diluting if required.

Under CLP the product is not classified as hazardous and carries no H or P statements and no signal word. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using it, and wash your hands afterwards. Ensure good ventilation. In case of eye contact, rinse with water; in case of skin contact, wash with plenty of water. Do not allow to enter the environment (water hazard class WGK 2, Germany). Store cool and protected from direct sunlight; incompatible with strong acids and alkalis.
