Schmincke Bronze Medium 60 ml – binder for oil bronzes

Schmincke Bronze Medium – binder for oil bronzes and metallic effects

Schmincke Bronze Medium is a ready-to-use, concentrated binder for Schmincke oil bronzes. You mix it with the bronze pigment to make a paint that brushes on easily and gives shimmering metallic effects on oil paintings and on other surfaces such as wood, metal or plaster.

The medium is intended only for use with Schmincke oil bronzes and for interior use. Once dry, the layer remains soluble in turpentine and white spirit. The bottle contains 60 ml.

Mixing the Bronze Medium

Shake the bottle before use. Then mix the oil bronze and medium with a palette knife on a palette or a glass plate until the colour is even. According to the manufacturer, the mixing ratio is 3 parts oil bronze to 2 parts Bronze Medium. This helps you plan quantities: for every 2 parts of medium you need 3 parts of pigment. If the mixture is too thick, you can thin it with white spirit as required.

• Shake the bottle before use
• Mix 3 parts oil bronze and 2 parts medium with a palette knife
• Thin with white spirit if required
• Use indoors only

Surfaces and varnish

Besides oil paintings, you can use the Bronze Medium on wood, metal and plaster. Because the layer remains soluble in turpentine and white spirit after drying, Schmincke recommends carrying out preliminary tests before varnishing. Test the varnish and the bronze layer on a sample piece first, before you coat a finished work. The medium is also available in a 200 ml bottle if you are working on larger areas.
