Schmincke Acrylic Matting Medium – reduce the gloss of acrylic paints

Schmincke Acrylic Matting Medium is a gel-like additive for acrylic paints. You mix it into the paint to reduce the gloss, from semi-matt to matt depending on how much you add. It also slows down drying, so you have a little more time for painting and blending.

Schmincke specifies a maximum mixing ratio of 1:1. The medium must not be applied neat. The bottle contains 250 ml and is enough for many mixes.

How to matt acrylic paint

The more matting medium you add, the more matt the dried paint becomes. The upper limit is 1:1, meaning no more medium than paint. The medium is water-miscible.

• Put the paint you want on a separate palette and mix the matting medium in thoroughly there.
• Start with a small amount of medium and increase it gradually until you are happy with the level of gloss.
• Do a test swatch on the same surface and let it dry before judging how matt the finish will be.
• Apply the mixture like normal acrylic paint. Never paint the medium on by itself.

Good to know

Because the medium slows drying, the paint stays workable for longer. This helps with transitions. With a high proportion of medium, however, you need to allow for longer drying times. Clean brushes and tools with water and soap straight after painting. Close the bottle again immediately and store it in a cool, dry place away from frost.
