Mayco Flame Red UG-207 – red underglaze for ceramics

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-207 Flame Red is an underglaze in a strong red. You use it to paint motifs, patterns and areas onto leather-hard clay or bisque, then protect them with a clear glaze. The colours in the Fundamentals range can be mixed with each other.

Without a clear glaze, the underglaze fires to a matt finish. For greater colour intensity and for dinnerware, apply a clear glaze or a matt clear glaze over the top. For Flame Red, Mayco recommends the clear glaze SW-001.

Application and firing

Shake the paint well before use. Apply it with a brush to wet or leather-hard clay or to bisque. A thin coat is enough for details and patterns; for rich, opaque areas, apply several coats and let each one dry slightly. According to Mayco, without a clear glaze the colour becomes concentrated at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and at cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart).

• Apply the underglaze to leather-hard clay, then fire to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• Then, optionally, apply a clear glaze and glaze fire: earthenware cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart), stoneware up to cone 10
• The colours are designed for cone 06/05, but most keep their colour at higher temperatures too. Mayco recommends a test at your own firing temperature.

Dinnerware safe only under a clear glaze

Flame Red is dinnerware safe only under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). This does not apply without a clear glaze. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means the product is exempt from hazard labelling. If you decorate dinnerware, check the finished piece yourself after firing.
