Rayher Extension Spring with Eyelets – 220 mm Long for Bouncing Mobiles
The Rayher extension spring with eyelets is a metal spring for crafting: you hang it from the top eyelet and attach whatever should bounce to the bottom one. It is 220 mm long with a diameter of 15 mm. It is often used for mobiles, whose hanging decorations bob up and down nicely on the spring.
Extension springs are also used in physics lessons to study the effects of springs. For crafting, though, you do not need to calculate anything: hang the spring, attach the weight and try out how much it bounces.
Making a bouncing hanging
Fix the top eyelet to a firm point, such as a hook, a branch or a mobile frame. Hang the decoration from the bottom eyelet, ideally using a short piece of thread or wire. The weight determines how far the spring stretches and how much it bobs afterwards: a light decoration barely makes it give, while a heavier one pulls it further apart. Test the weight before hanging it up for good. Do not hang anything so heavy that the spring is permanently stretched, as an overstretched spring will no longer spring back.
