Proxxon FBS 240/E – variable-speed precision drill and grinder in a case

The Proxxon FBS 240/E precision drill and grinder (art. no. 28472) from the MICROMOT range is a hand-held tool for drilling, milling, grinding, polishing, brushing, cutting and engraving. The plastic case holds 43 accessories, so you can start your first projects without buying anything else.

You can adjust the speed continuously from 5,000 to 22,000 rpm. The full-wave electronics keep the torque almost constant even in the lower speed range. You need this for fine drilling, brushing and polishing, because the machine does not lose power at low speed. The quick-release chuck takes shanks from 0.3 to 3.2 mm. The spindle runs on ball bearings and can be locked at the push of a button for changing tools.

Which jobs and which speed?

The case contains twist drills, grinding bits and sanding bands, a polishing wheel, a brass brush and cutting discs, among other items. This covers model making, jewellery, and small-scale work in wood and metal. As a rule of thumb, polishing and brushing are best done at low to medium speed. On plastic, too high a speed can melt the material through frictional heat. High speeds suit grinding and cutting with small discs. It is best to test the setting on an offcut.

Working safely and changing tools

Unplug the tool before every tool change. Lock the spindle with the push button, then loosen or tighten the quick-release chuck. Clamp the workpiece firmly, wear safety goggles when milling, grinding and cutting, and do not apply side pressure to cutting discs, as they can break. For precise holes, place the machine in a MICROMOT drill stand; for firm grinding or polishing work, use a horizontal stand. Both fit the 20 mm system diameter.
