da Vinci Series 700 – sword brush for pinstriping
The Series 700 sword brush from da Vinci is a classic brush for pinstriping, that is, painting decorative lines on paintwork, for example on car and motorcycle parts. The Kazan squirrel hair holds a lot of paint, so you can pull long lines and sweeping curves without constantly re-loading the brush.
The slanted sword shape is easy to control as you pull: with light pressure the line stays narrow, with more pressure it gets wider. According to da Vinci, the brush is handmade and belongs to the PETIT GRIS PUR range.
Paints and surfaces
Besides custom painting on vehicle parts, da Vinci names acrylic and watercolour paints as well as paper, card, canvas, wood, metal and skin as surfaces. You can therefore also use the brush for lettering, ornaments or borders on signs, furniture and pictures.
Pulling a line
Work the paint thoroughly into the hair on the palette until it is evenly saturated but not dripping. Then place the tip on the surface and pull the brush at a steady pace – the hair trails behind the hand, hence the name. Rest the heel of your hand or your little finger on the surface so the line stays steady. If the paint is too thick, the line breaks up; if it is too thin, it runs. It is best to practise new curves on paper or a test panel first.
According to da Vinci, Series 700 is available in sizes 0 to 4. The higher the number, the wider the hair and the wider the line.
