Prym S9 knitting zip in dark brown – to sew or knit on

The Prym type S9 knitting zip in dark brown is an open-ended zip for cardigans and other knitwear. The tape is partly loosely woven, so you can easily sew the zip on or knit it directly onto the edge with yarn.

The chain, slider and tape are all the same dark brown, so the zip is barely noticeable on the cardigan. The plastic teeth are 6 mm wide and the tape measures 29 mm. Open-ended means you can separate the two halves completely, as on a jacket.

Using the knitting zip

To sew it on, pin the zip to the knitted edge and sew the loose tape on with hand stitches. Do not stretch the knitted piece as you do so, otherwise the edge will ripple later. To knit it on, pick up stitches through the loose weave of the tape and carry on knitting from there. Work out the number of stitches according to the length of the zip.

Choosing the length

The zip is available in 50, 60 and 70 cm; choose the length from the options. Measure the edge where it will be inserted beforehand and choose the length that fits as closely as possible. It is also suitable as a replacement for a faulty open-ended knitting zip.
