Opinel No. 08 stainless steel pocket knife with sheath

Opinel No. 08 stainless steel with sheath – pocket knife with safety ring

The Opinel No. 08 stainless steel pocket knife is a classic folding knife with a wooden handle for leisure, hobbies and the workshop. It comes with an alpine-style sheath, in which you keep the knife and protect the blade.

According to Opinel, the 8.5 cm blade is made of martensitic stainless steel with a hardness of 55–57 HRC. The steel comes from Europe. The hardness matters in practice: a blade in this range is easy to resharpen and keeps its edge for a good while under normal use.

Construction and locking

The Opinel is made up of just a few parts: blade, handle, fixed ring, rivet and the rotating ring that Opinel introduced in 1955. According to the manufacturer, this Virobloc ring locks the blade against accidental opening and closing. So after opening the knife, turn the ring to the locked position before you cut, and only release it again when you want to close the knife.

What you can use the knife for

The simple shape suits everyday cutting jobs during leisure activities such as hiking, camping or fishing, as well as small tasks in the kitchen, workshop and hobby room. The blade is not designed for prising: if you lever off lids or split material, it may be damaged. The sheath protects the blade when you put the knife away. Opinel also offers to personalise the knife.
