Mayco EG-002 Speckled Buff Engobe for Stoneware

Mayco Stoneware Engobe Speckled Buff EG-002 creates a natural matte ivory surface with fine brown speckles. At cone 6 in oxidation, it fires to a warm speckled finish. The appearance remains largely unchanged when fired to cone 10 in reduction.

EG-002 is ideal when you want the look of a light speckled clay body without changing the clay you are working with. The engobe can be used on light, red and dark clay bodies and provides a versatile base for additional glazes and decorative techniques.

Application, glaze combinations and our tip

Stir the engobe thoroughly before use. Apply two to three even coats with a soft fan brush, allowing each coat to dry. Avoid excessive brushing to prevent the brown speckles from smearing and to maintain an even distribution.

Will the speckles remain visible beneath a glaze?
The brown speckles usually remain clearly visible beneath transparent and semi-transparent glazes. Opaque glazes may partially or completely cover the speckled effect. The engobe can also influence the flow and final appearance of the glaze applied over it.

Is EG-002 suitable for tableware?
When used on food or drink surfaces, the engobe must be covered with a dinnerware-safe clear glaze or another suitable glaze that creates a sealed and chemically durable surface.

Our experience: EG-002 gives plain clay bodies the natural appearance of speckled stoneware. It works especially well beneath transparent or slightly translucent glazes, creating a lively surface with a warm, handcrafted character.

Our tip: The clay body, application thickness, glaze and firing temperature can all affect the final result. Always make a test tile using the intended clay body, engobe and glaze combination before starting a larger project.
