Mayco EG-001 White Engobe for Stoneware

Mayco Stoneware Engobe White EG-001 creates an even white surface on light, red, speckled and dark clay bodies. At cone 6 in oxidation, the engobe fires to a matte white finish. At cone 10 in reduction, it may develop a slight sheen.

EG-001 is ideal when you want the appearance of a white clay body without changing the clay you are working with. The white engobe also provides a versatile base for additional glazes and decorative techniques.

Application, glaze combinations and our tip

Stir the engobe thoroughly before use. Apply two to three even coats with a soft fan brush, allowing each coat to dry completely. The piece can then be fired with the matte engobe surface or covered with a suitable stoneware glaze.

Can EG-001 be combined with a glaze?
Yes. The white engobe is an excellent base for transparent, semi-transparent and decorative stoneware glazes. Because an engobe can affect the flow, colour and final appearance of the glaze applied over it, we recommend testing the desired combination first.

Is the engobe suitable for tableware?
When used on food or drink surfaces, the engobe must be covered with a dinnerware-safe clear glaze or another suitable glaze that creates a sealed and chemically durable surface.

Our experience: EG-001 is especially useful on red, dark or speckled clay bodies. The white base can help glazes applied over it appear clearer and more vibrant while providing additional creative possibilities.

Our tip: The clay body, application thickness, firing temperature and kiln atmosphere can all affect the final result. Always make a test tile using the intended clay body, engobe and glaze before applying the combination to larger pieces.
